MHzscape - ì¼Ù° Tinnitus

extracted from the list of songs played on FM radio channel 3 for 3 days, i.e. April 15, 16 and 17, 2014.

salt, variable size, 2014

MHzscape - Tinnitus represents a tragic incident. On April 16, 2014, a passenger ferry sank off the coast of South Korea. As the country watched live broadcasts in horror, hundreds of passengers drowned. Most of the victims were 16-year-old students on a field trip to the holiday island of Jeju. The government has made no move to save people. That's why it was an incident, not a simple accident. In all, 304 people died, and it quickly became clear that the ferry's sinking was a man-made disaster of corruption, efficiency, and incompetence. And I¡®ve lost a perspective and judgment about why the nation exists and what the nation is.

This work is the record of the 3 days.At that time, I was listening to the Radio the whole time. I extracted some parts of lyrics from the list of songs which was played on the radio for 3 days, the previous day, the day, and the next day. I tried to describe the enormous irrationalities in ordinary words. I filtered excessive emotional expressions so that people feel like a meditation when they see the work. I exhibited this work in the city of victims. So I wanted the words to carefully induce people to remind their own experiences and memories. And I wanted it to become a movement of the vibrant life resisting oblivion.

"How much pain there is in the world we live in!" (Paul Tournier)

Mind. We can never know its true nature and its identify is unclear, but we feel it everyday, and we experience heaven or hell depending on our mind. For the past few years, healing has been a hot topic, and books and lectures dealing with mind boomed. These phenomena prove that our lives became more difficult on the contrary. In a world hard on us like this, we spent the year of 2014 in pain and went through a hard time. In pain we experienced the contradiction stemming from the social system that placed the highest values only on speed and efficiency, and the enormous loss resulting from it. Particularly in Ansan, this pain belonged to the persons directly involved, and they had so painful time that they could not even talk about pain. Towards the end of an eventful year, I thought that all we could do in Ansan was to cautiously open up our mind and attempt small consolation and condolences through contemporary art. The exhibition adopted a method of consoling Ansan, humming in a low voice and whispering in the ear rather than dealing with the incident. It tried to deal with the viewpoint and experience of looking at life and death, and dealt mostly with works that approached the incident truthfully based on the artists¡¯ own experiences more than anything else. Their experiences are varied, e,g, nostalgia due to migration, loss of family, pregnancy and childbirth and memories with mother, but the base of their works has one thing in common, i.e.  they listen to their inner voices, and sooth our mind.

Susan Sontag emphasized how superficial and relative a value the images of disasters, dramatically exposed in numerous media and the resulting emotions are in ¡¸Regarding the Pain of Others¡¹. As it is a disaster different from a war, the current situation may be read differently, but this exhibition started out as an attempt to mourn and console people, not to depict the reality that is revealed superficially and dramatically. I though what we can say in Ansan at this point in time, and what is most necessary is to listen to their mind, look at myself, think about the  scratches in my mind, and listen to the voice of the mind through the artists¡¯ works.

Han So Hyun has been installing a phrase that reads ¡®might be happy someday¡¯ in a guerilla style while asking what is 'happiness.' In this exhibition, the artist researched the music played on the radio for three days before and after the MV Sewol incident, edited the lyrics and installed them on the floor. The author used her work to express her experience, i.e. her heart about to sink being broadcast on the radio while listening to music played on the radio as if it were business as usual.

The work makes us mourn, do some soul-searching and mediate, and feel lyric emotions. There are many ways to cope with sorrow, but it is recommended that you should experience diverse ways to deal with sorrow, reflect on life and death as man, a finite being, and listen attentively to the voice of the heart for a moment through the sincere works of the 11 artists who intone as if they were whispering.
